MDeC or Multimedia Development Corporation is the custodian of the Multimedia Super Corridor or the MSC, the brand name that is synonymous with information technology in Malaysia. started as a brainchild of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the MSC, which has since been re-branded as MSC Malaysia has set the benchmark around the world for internationally recognized computing services from the country. MDeC is the agency who was appointed to oversee the mega project which was to transform the local information technology into an internationally recognized one.
Some of the projects undertaken by MDeC ever since its inception in 1996 includes the launching of cyber cities like Cyberjaya and Technology Park Malaysia and transforming them into becoming major hi-tech cities renowned around the world. MDeC, who is involved in awarding MSC Malaysia status to technology based companies have also increased participation by corporate and private companies in this project. MDeC has over the years involved in various technology centric projects set to increase the profile of Malaysia around the world. Such projects are like the Smart School projects implemented in the education sector and more significantly the MyKad, which is the smart identity card used by all Malaysians. The project, which was run with local MSC Malaysia company IRIS Corporation have since gained international recognition with demands for technology transfer and knowledge sharing on a project this scale coming from many countries around the world. With such projects at hand, MDeC’s effort in increasing the information uptake in Malaysia is seek to continue having gained the relevant experience and recognition worldwide.
